The acoustical Society of Nigeria was formed, following the attendance of Dr. Mrs. Joy Oluchi Uguru at the International Congress on Acoustics in Madrid, Spain. Many member nations of the world were represented at that congress. Egypt and South Africa were the only African nations that were members of the International Commission for Acoustics. Unfortunately, Nigeria was not a member. Dr. Uguru arranged with the officials of the commission to start off an acoustical society in Nigeria since the nation stood to benefit from it. This was warmly welcomed. On the 16th November, 2012, the inaugural meeting was held. This society now has members in various parts of the country and targets at handling acoustic issues in the country, particularly as it relates to noise pollution, following the guidelines of the International Commission on Acoustics.
